WordPress Plugins: Akismet
Akismet is one of those WordPress anti-spam plugins which is not only essential, it's also highly recommended. It's an official free plugin by WordPress parent company Automattic and, if you aren't using it, you should be.
In addition to experimenting with different options you can install a WordPress plugin like Akismet or to help you keep spam comments under control.
Akismet uses a unique algorithm combined with a community-created database to learn which comments are comment spam and which are legitimate.
Current versions of WordPress come with Akismet installed by default. If you have uninstalled the plugin you ca re-install it by clicking Add New:
and then activate:
Now we need to configure Akismet. This is done by providing an API key.
Click Set up your Akismet account and on the next screen select the appropriate for you option:
- enter your API key and click Connect with API key button
- click Get your API key button (we also follow this option)
Now we are redirected to
akismet.com and we click the blue button Get an Akismet API Key:
On the next screen we can create new account or we can login with our existing
wordpress.com account. We have an existing Gravatar account and we log in with it's credentials:
On the next screen we select the Basic plan and click Get Basic button:
Now enter your names in the fields, drag the slider to the far left position and click the Continue button:
Note: Akismet offers three different pricing plans as well as a pay per call plan. Personal accounts are free. If your site is for a business or if it promotes a product or service, you should pick from one of the paid plan options.
A modal(pop up) window will be displayed where you must add the site you are activating Akismet for, by clicking Activate this site:
The activation process is completed successfully and now Akismet is ready to protect your site from spam:
How does Akismet work?
Each time a new comment, trackback, or pingback is added to your site it's submitted to the Akismet web service which runs hundreds of tests on the comment. As a result, you don't have to waste your time sorting through and deleting spammy comments from your blog.
What is false positive?
False positive is a comment that is not actually spam, but is mistakenly marked as so. You have to unmark it and let it back into the stream of legitimate comments.
Go to Settings > Akismet general screen where are displayed Statistics, Settings and Account information:
Click on Detailed Stats link to see more detailed statistics:
Click Akismet Settings link at the top of the screen to return to the previous screen.
