Create and Manage FTP Account in CPanel
In this article we'll show you how to create and manage your website's File Transfer Protocol (FTP) accounts in CPanel. We are going to create an FTP account for our website hostpulse-addon.com.
Go to CPanel > Files and click on FTP Accounts link:
From the Domain dropdown list select your domain (
hostpulse-addon.com in the example). In the Log In text box enter FTP account name -
Use the built-in password generator to create strong password (write down the password in a file):
CPanel will suggest the directory name from the domain name - to select the proper directory without the risk of misspelling it enter the first letters and click the correct directory from suggestions list:
Select the size of the account - if you do not have any specific reason leave it as its default Unlimited:
The new account will appear in FTP Accounts table below:
If you want to see the full path to the directory click on the underlined three dots symbol:
Manage FTP Accounts
Use links in the FTP Accounts table to manage your accounts.
To change the password click Change Password link and create new password in the form:
Clicking on Change Quota link will open interface where you can change the size of the account:
To delete FTP account click on Delete link.
Be very careful here because if you check Delete the User's Home Directory box and your FTP account can access publichtml directory this option automatically will remove the publichtml directory and all of its contents, which will break all your websites:
To copy all account configuration settings (without the password) click on Configure FTP Client link.
If you click on FTP Configuration File you will download an
.xml file containing all account details. If you click
instructions(new window) link you'll be redirected to a new screen with specific information on how to configure the corresponding FTP client:
To check if your new FTP account is correctly configured open your FTP client (we'll use FileZilla) and enter the server, username and password in the Site Manager. For FTP server name you can also use your domain
hostpulse-addon.com or your ftp subdomain
Because we are using encrypted connection without actually having installed SSL certificate the program will ask for our permission - check the bottom left box
Always trust … and click OK:
The connection with the site directory is established and we can start transfer the files:
