Create Email Account in Thunderbird
Mozilla Thunderbird is an excellent free mail client considered widely to be one of the most reliable and easy to use mail programs. We can hardly find any reasonable arguments to disagree, that's why we start our series with creating a Thunderbird account.
Download the last stable version from the developer’s site - Thunderbird Download
Install the program on your computer and start Thunderbird.
Create IMAP mail account in Thunderbird
Open the program and click Email link to start configuration process:
The first window should be ignored, so remove the checkmark and click Skip this and use my existing email button:
Fill in your business or personal name, the complete email address and password.
When you are ready, click Continue button:
On the next window you will notice that Thunderbird is trying to guess server names, but in our case both the server names and the username are wrong.
Luckily we can repair those missteps in the next window where we click on the Manual config button:
There are few corrections to be made and they are:
- Enter the correct mail server names
- Change the security protocol type from STARTTLS to SSL/TLS - port values will change accordingly by themselves.
- Enter full username
firstname.lastname@example.org of just example
Click Done to finish configuration.
Now in the main program window you see the registered account:
Let's test if our account is working properly. We just sent a test mail from gmail to
email@example.com and few seconds later we received the message in our inbox:
Let's reply - we are writing few words and clicking on the Send button.
Few seconds later we received the message in our Gmail box:
Congratulations. You've got mail!
Use Thunderbird to manage Gmail account
You can also manage through Thunderbird’s interface your Gmail or Yahoo mail accounts and here is how to do it.
From the first screen click on the Email link under Create a new account:
Enter name, Gmail email, password and click Continue button:
Check all configuration details and if correct, click Done button (notice the difference in the authentication value in comparison to previous example):
Now Gmail will open a login window where you must enter first Gmail email, next - the password in order to authenticate Thunderbird to manage Gmail's account:
Click Allow button and few seconds later (in our case, yours might get longer if you have a lot of emails) you are going to see all content (user created folders as well) of the Gmail's mailbox within Thunderbird:

How to Edit or Remove Thunderbird Account
Open Thunderbird and click on the email address (set in bold type):
Click on View settings for this account link:
Within the next window you can edit/modify all account settings and let's change our Account Name:
Click on Server Settings tab to edit Incoming IMAP server settings:
Under Composition & Addressing tab you can change the format and layout of your messages:
Within Outgoing Server (SMTP) you can edit server settings:
From Account Actions button (at the bottom left corner) you can remove an account or execute another action from the list:
In this article, we've shown how you can manage mail accounts from different email providers through Mozilla Thunderbird interface.
But we want to note that there are no more important elements in building a noticeable internet presence and recognizable own brand than having your own domain name and own website.
